Petey by Ben Mikaelsen

CONFLICT
In the story Petey, there are quite a few different conflicts. Since it is the story of his life, there is no real problem that has to be solved so there are other hardships that Petey faced. One conflict is that everyone thinks Petey is feeble minded, meaning there is no hope for him to recover or that his brain doesn't work. This is what caused him to go to an asylum because they thought he was worthless. That was not the case and the people who got to know him knew he was even smarter than they were. 'Esteban shook his head, "Petey, you're no idiot!' (p.25)" A second problem that was inflicted on Petey was how anybody that became his friends left as the story was starting to get brighter. I can count 5 characters and a dozen mice that Petey became very fond of but they just left. So many promises had been broken to Petey and that really hurt him because he didn't exactly understand why they all had to leave. Towards the end of the book a new conflict arises for Petey and that is whether or not he should trust anyone now or befriend them. He is very wounded from all of his loss of friends that he shuts himself out from wanting to get to know any one.
